Jules from The Style Aesthetics started this project by first applying Velvet Luxe to her fireplace. This indoor/outdoor paint requires minimal prep, painting is made easier with it's advanced self-levelling properties helping it to dry flawlessly flat and matte every time. After a bit of time, the previous beige coloured walls surrounding the fireplace was painted over in the same crisp white but this time in Artisan Matte Estate Wall Paint extending the crisp white from the fireplace out seamlessly onto the walls, encasing and creating a beautiful cohesive crisp white room.

Special Note: normally we would recommend a couple of coats of Artisan Lacquer over Velvet Luxe for that extra strength for steps but it does just depend on how you use them and whether a pure Velvet Luxe paint finish would be fit for purpose. For Jules she's was happy with strength of Velvet Luxe for this area and to leave it as it was, we touched base with her a few months after the project was finished and she was happy with how they were holding up. We have known customers to do floors in Velvet Luxe in low traffic areas, like bathrooms, hall ways, laundry rooms and leave it without an extra coat of Artisan lacquer and have been very happy with the results and the way they wear, which is a testament to the strength of Velvet Luxe. Others who prefer to lacquer over the top especially in high traffic areas and with indoor pets.
Video showing Starling on the walls during the day and at night Belinda from Renaissance Studio has truly demonstrated the transformative power of Artisan Paints in this bedroom makeover. The blog post highlights how various finishes and colours from Artisan Paints can turn a plain, neutral room into a luxurious and inviting oasis. Here's a breakdown of the key elements in this beautiful transformation:
Photo: Before photo, large neutral room, we are all familiar with this colour way often found in new builds, or open homes walk throughs, a safe set of neutrals that appeals to the masses.
Artisan Matte Estate Paint (Color: Starling): Belinda chose Artisan Matte Estate Paint in Starling to paint the bedroom walls. It's noteworthy that she applied the paint directly over the existing wall without extensive prep work, demonstrating the ease of use of Artisan Paints. The matte finish of this paint offers a smooth and luxurious appearance, while the multi-pigmented Artisan color adds depth and dimension to the walls. The fact that it has little to no smell with a fast dry time allowed her to comfortably paint the room even on a rainy day.
Skirting, Doors, and Shutters (Artisan Velvet Luxe Crisp White): To create a beautiful contrast against the dark Starling walls, Belinda used Artisan Velvet Luxe Crisp White for the skirting, doors, and shutters. This choice freshens up the room contrasts, complements & beautifully frames the darker walls in Starling.
Bedroom Furniture (Artisan Premium Chalk Paint): The bedroom furniture received special attention. Belinda painted it using Artisan Premium Chalk Paint in Imperial Linen without any prep work. She aged it with dark wax then softened that age through a colour wash of Old Chiffon finished off with clear wax with the details lightly touched with Artisan metallic glides for a subtle shimmer.
Luxurious Touches: Belinda incorporated luxurious touches to enhance the overall aesthetic. A large mirror on the wall was painted in Artisan Metallics Artemis bronze and aged with Carbon Black wax. This same metallic finish was carried through to the door and wardrobe handles, tying the room's design elements together cohesively.
Variety of Artisan Paint Finishes: This bedroom makeover serves as an excellent showcase of the versatility of Artisan Paints. Belinda used different Artisan Paints & finishes, from a luxurious matte artisan colour on the walls to the luminosity of Artisan Metallics on the mirror and decorative finishes in Premium Chalk Paint on the furniture. It highlights how these paints can be used in various ways to achieve stunning results throughout a room.
Belinda's bedroom transformation exemplifies how Artisan Paints can elevate a space, adding personality, depth, and dimension. The careful selection of colours and finishes, as well as the creative use of techniques, results in a luxurious yet relaxed atmosphere that truly wows. This blog post serves as a fantastic source of inspiration for anyone looking to rejuvenate their living space with artisanal paints and what it can achieve. Thank you Belinda for inviting us into your space and allowing us to share you beautiful inspiration! x
Photo Cabinet : Painted in Artisan Obsidian Blue Velvet Luxe with gold. Such a clever & stunning pairing of wall paper and paint colour, transforming an Old glass cabinet into such a bespoke feature piece
Mix Design & Co based in Hamilton is a place where the magic of furniture transformation with Artisan Paints takes centre stage. The brainchild of Melanie Stewart who has been painting furniture on and off for over two decades, but it wasn't until 2018 that this creative venture truly came to life.
Photo: Bedsides in Artisan Velvet Luxe in Calicut paired with wood tones. Beautiful foresight in transforming orange toned Bedsides into a beautiful soft restful finish that is current.
Melanie finds painting furniture not just a craft but a fun and rewarding endeavour that nourishes the soul. “ You can’t beat the feeling of seeing the end result of a piece you’ve finished, knowing that you’ve done it! Such a sense of achievement” Melanie operates from home, turning her garage into a haven of creativity, finding pre-loved pieces and adding her style and flair to it with the possibilities of Artisan Paints. Rescuing pieces that might otherwise find their way to landfills, giving them a new lease on life, and allowing them to be cherished for years to come. Artisan Paints play a pivotal role in this sustainability journey, helping Mix Design & Co to breathe fresh life and inject style into furniture, transforming forgotten items into cherished heirlooms in a premium quality finish.
Photo: Glass Cabinet Light and Bright in Wild Tusk Velvet Luxe Paint another clever pairing of Wall Paper and Artisan Paint to create a timeless elegant piece.
Dabbling with various paint brands over the years, Melanie stumbled upon The Artisan Company brand, particularly the Velvet Luxe line. It was a serendipitous finger injury that led her to explore this paint further, thanks to its reduced prep requirements. “….ever since then I’ve never looked back. Now using Artisan Paints exclusively even after my injury has healed”
Photo: bedside in Artisan Duck Egg Velvet Luxe, the top colour washed in Potters Clay Premium Chalk Paint then sealed with Matte Lacquer. The Artisan Velvet Luxe paint range is cherished for several reasons, with its minimal prep requirements topping the list making the creative process quicker and more accessible. Without the need for a top coat means that once you have finished painting, you are done, no need to wax or lacquer. Depending on the project at hand, Melanie selects between Artisan Premium Chalk paint for a decorative touch or Artisan Velvet Luxe for a sleek, contemporary finish, which aligns perfectly with her signature style. The Velvet Luxe paint range offers a beautiful finish that requires minimal prep, no additional sealing is required, has advanced self levelling technology for a smooth luxuriously matte finish that's durable.

Quality finishes in Artisan Premium Paints and an unwavering attention to detail define Melanie’s work. With over two decades of experience, her expertise shines through in the pieces she creates and re-designs. Melanie takes pride in her simplicity, preferring not to go overboard unless a client desires it. Her pieces effortlessly blend into various interiors and styles, showcasing her versatility and commitment to timeless elegance and we love her contemporary chic take on furniture.

But what truly warms our hearts is witnessing the diverse ways in which our paints are interpreted by creative minds like Mix Design & Co right here in New Zealand. It's a kaleidoscope of imagination and innovation that exemplifies the spirit of creativity thriving in our beautiful country. Knowing that Artisan Paints have the magical ability to inspire people to view the world differently, to see hidden potential in everyday objects, and to embark on creative journeys they may never have considered is a testament to the vibrant artistic community in New Zealand. We were recently invited to stay at Belindas place who was first a passionate customer who then turned that passion and energy into becoming an Artisan retailer. She's been busy painting not just inside her store but also inside her villa in Pukekohe.... a quest to paint out every single bedroom and living area in Artisan Paints and Products; a chance to redecorate and breathe new energy and life into her Villa with Premium paints and finishes.
Like with many of our retailers we've been keeping in touch with Belinda over this course of time talking about colours and pairings and she really has been flying through it all, which we expect given there's little to no prep and often will little to no smell and being low in VOCs it's often the rainy bad days that Belinda will spend inside her home creating her spaces in Artisan Paints. So it was really quite exciting for us to stop by for visit and see the finished rooms in person and you bet we've taken photos and videos to pass on that inspiration. Thank you Belinda for your warm welcome into your inspiring home and allowing us to capture and share these photos/ Videos. Today we're sharing a room painted in Artisan Tahr but before we get into it lets take a quick look at the before:
It's amazing what Artisan Colour can do to transform a space with minimal prep. Using Artisan Matte Estate wall paint in Artisan Tahr, Belinda has rolled our premium wall paint richly loaded with multiple pigments straight onto her walls using the recommended Wooster roller. These two paired together will allow anyone to create beautifully flat smooth Artisan matte walls every time; from the novice painter to the expert painter. Encasing the room in a signature Artisan colour with sophisticated subtle nuances as Tahr adjusts to all types of lighting creating beautiful depth and a true living colour across the walls from morning to night and through all the seasons.
Inspired by Artisan Tahr, Belinda has completed the space by dressing the room with earthy spice tones and accents with brown leathers , contrasting it all with beautiful soft off white bedding.
She has painted her decor in Artisan Metallic Alchemy to suit the space, finding the right decor for a space can be an expensive and frustrating experiment, but when you are able to create your own bespoke decor by painting over an exisiting one and transforming it to suit, we love and so here for this concept. Creating a bespoke space not just through furniture and walls but also in the decor and those finishing touches....even the door handle has been painted in Artisan paints.
Blanket Box before
Blanket box in Artisan Premium Chalk Paint, waxes and metallics, a piece we created together with Belinda in one of our painting sessions last year when we did a road trip through to see our Artisan retailers. "A sentimental piece I couldn't part with so I had to have it at home" - Belinda. A finish with multiple colours, layers and wax works like this one is super versatile in an interior space, adding character into you home and allowing you to creatively draw upon the colours within it out into your space. This one sits beautifully here, adjusting itself to the Tahr back drop and the greenery placed on it pulling out the subtle soft greens and earthy tones within it.
A little behind the scenes from last year of the Blanket Box being painted. From Dark, highly varnished to beautifully rustic, elegant and old worldly...
We love this corner where there is very little natural night hitting it, Tahr deepens to a beautiful shade of itself.
Versus the wall behind the bed with a strong flood of natural light. #livingcolour #artisancraftedcolours
Bed head painted in Artisan paints, frame in Metallic Alchemy, rattan in Velvet Lue and that bedside? look what it was before below. We love how this shows how you can utilise odd / dated pieces and with a little imagination you can create something to work in with your space whilst knowing you have created a bespoke piece for your home.
Now here's a quick video we took while we there... one, of the room at night and the other of the room in the morning light showing how beautiful Artisan Tahr adjusts to both natural and artificial light.
We have loved visiting Belinda's home and what a beautiful showcase of what a room painted out in Artisan Paints can look like. This entire room has been transformed using Artisan paints, colours and textures; from Stone Effects, Premium Chalk Paints, Metallic Alchemy to Matte Estate wall paint and Velvet Luxe, re-imagining dated pieces, pulling odd pieces together adjusting hardware and decor to suit, encasing the room with rich multipigmented Artisan Paints. Thanks again Belinda for your beautiful example of this!..... This wasn't the only room we captured so stay tuned on the blog or our facebook page for more :-)
A beautiful collection of Artisan Paint Projects today from Lisa C in Auckland who most definitely has the eye for seeing things for what they could be with Artisan Paints over what she sees in front of her. The ease & quality of Artisan Paints opening so many doors when it comes to colours and finishes and creating a personalised home. Not limited to just furniture but also decor, having the freedom to create something unique and bespoke, to re-design and revive effortlessly. Today's blog entry showcases the beautiful transformations from cushions , chairs to coffee tables and vases painted in Artisan Paints by Lisa. A long time customer and supporter of The Artisan Company; thank you Lisa we really appreciate your longstanding support for a NZ brand and company, always such a joy and pleasure to see what you are doing with Artisan Paints. Thank you for allowing us to share your creative inspirations today x
"Been making stencils and cushions. Using Carbon Black - Velvet. It’s works so well on material"- Lisa C
We have so much love for this creative idea. How gorgeous are these cushions that have been stencilled in Carbon Black Velvet Luxe. Beautiful neutral cushions in linens and hessian personalised and made for the home with some simple stencilling with words and numbers. Velvet Luxe is perfect for something like this, with you not needing to wax afterwards. Just go ahead and stencil, take advantage of the coverage and once dry you are finished, you have your very own hand done, personalised cushion. Great way to bring up some old tired cushions or even add your touch to some plain new ones.
Take a look at this very traditional chair, beautiful shape, sunken seat and we absolutely love how Lisa re-interpreted this into something bright, bold and funky. Working in with the new Upholstery (which she does herself), she has cleverly chosen a colour that compliments the fabric. She picked out the subtle hints of Teal in the fabric and drew it out onto the frame of chair. Painting it in Tropical Lagoon Premium Chalk Paint with a Carbon Black wax to slightly deepen.
All done in a 120ml Sample Pot, that's a pretty cost effective transformation!
When deciding on a colour to go with a print, wall paper or fabric. Draw out the most subtle less obvious colour in the design of the wall paper or fabric to tie and connect it without it being too "matchy match" That freedom is completely yours to redesign and create something beautifully bespoke for your home.
Those buttons on the chair, they've been painted in Tropical Lagoon Premium Chalk paint and waxed as well! It's those small details that can make all the difference.
Lisa's dog obviously also has very good taste in his selection of chairs to sit on... what a cutie...
When it comes to seeing things differently, this one almost takes it out for us in this blog... We are all too familiar with this style of furniture in NZ, Rimu type coffee table where the varnish goes a bit "orangey" over time. Well made, well built, once all the rage in NZ homes but no longer really wanted, a lot of people struggle to let go because of the quality of the wood, but eventually... because it no longers works, most people do let it go. Artisan Paints is a great way to balance that style and quality. Keep those quality pieces and transform it into something you will love and that works in your home. With little to no prep you can get this done in under a day, a few hours max, little to no smell, you can even paint in the comfort of your home with a drop cloth. Lisa has castors for the legs, she built a simple frame to edge around the top of the coffee table, then she painted it all in Artisan Ocean Trench Velvet Luxe and...
Amazing! and we love the stud detailing on it to!
Ocean Trench sitting indoors and in place looking deep and luxurious Although Velvet Luxe does not require wax or lacquer to function as it is completely wipeable and highly durable. Dark, deep Matte colours do show more dust and marks than say a mid-tone colour, especially on something that is a coffee table that is often high use. So with Coffee Table tops that are dark, a quick coat of Artisan Lacquer may help with general wiping and cleaning on a regular basis and show up less dust. We absolutely love the vision that Lisa had with this, so creative and inspiring and has us all looking at our coffee tables twice...
Bentwood chairs, delicate, stylish and a reminiscent of yesteryear. But what would a more modern take on these look like? without taking away from the character?
"Carbon Black, I love you" - Lisa C
Classic and timeless in Carbon Black. A gorgeous rich black, loaded with pigments. Artisan Black is... black. We love the new upholstered cushions over the top of all that broken rattan. The best part about all of this is that no one else but Lisa will have chairs likes this and that is what we what we really want to encourage with Artisan paints... that ease of no sanding or priming just paint, fast dry time... makes jobs like these completely do-able. We want our customers to explore creating items and pieces that are beautifully bespoke to them and their homes and make it effortless and fun along the way..
All in the details again... that stripe on the back of that chair.... yep painted in Carbon Black Velvet Luxe.
and so is that cushion, stencilled in Carbon Black Velvet Luxe :-)
Quite a collection of browns and oranges in these before photos... once upon a time you would shudder at the amount of sanding required to get all the varnish off... now you pop the lid open off an Artisan Paint can and just head straight into it....
Look at the difference...dark and tired to fresh, light, classic and elegant in Artisan Sea Mist
The Other chair in Carbon Black sitting beautifully with the newly painted desk and what a difference that's made! Such a pretty setting.
As for those tables, what a transformation! (we keep saying this, but they are!) It's the classic black and white look. Using Carbon Black and a White gives you that edgy yet classic look and we love the way a simple paint finish in Velvet Luxe has completely restyled these old tables and added huge designer flair
and you bet those chair frames have been painted as well! In Sea Mist Velvet Luxe
Red and Shabby to light bright and classic
large Wooden Mirror and vase with coloured leaves... all neutralised for the hallway with Artisan paints....
When you know it adheres to pretty much anything... not even an old vase is safe. Op shops and second hand shops often have a plethora of different shaped vases and vessels that can be turned into decor, painted in Artisan Paints in neutral or in your colour of choice to perfectly suit your home.
Chair in Royal Navy with Lacquer
We have a wonderful community of customers throughout the country, and we know that they can relate to this when we say... once you've discovered how easy and effortless it all is. Nothing is safe and everything is possible .... Creating your beautiful home and sanctuary takes on a completely new meaning after discovering Artisan Paints. Create items that give you joy, transform homeware to specifically suit, customise and re-style at a small fraction of what it costs to buy new using quality Artisanal paints . We hope this blog entry has got your creative thoughts and ideas flowing on how to add that special touch to your home with Artisan Paints. Thanks again to Lisa for your wonderful photos and inspiration!
Now here's a beautiful bedroom makeover that showcases the beauty of living among Artisan Crafted colours. Utilising the ease of Artisan Paints on both furniture and walls to create a complete, beautifully bespoke and luxurious space. Wonderfully done by Belinda in Pukekohe who is also an Artisan Retailer for the area, deciding over a weekend to recreate this guest bedroom solely with Artisan Paints. We've been chatting with her right through it and once one this one was done, she was inspired and on a roll... and is currently in the midst of re-doing all the rooms in her home! So we're sure that you will be seeing more of her bedroom makeovers on here. Thank you Belinda for letting us share these before and after images to inspire Artisan colour and possibilities.
NZ is a country that is often shy of colour, and rooms like the one above, neutral with white trims is well within our comfort zone, just walk through most new builds and open homes and this colour palette is something we are quite familiar and comfortable with, its ideal for the mass but not if your looking to create a unique home with depth and warmth that reflects you. Here at the Artisan Company we want to encourage our customers to branch out with colour in their homes, even if just a little. With all the ease of little to no prep and the endless possibilities with the wide range of Artisan Paints and finishes with low VOCs, we want our customers to view their spaces as a blank canvas with endless possibilities. Yes that piece of furniture can be something special, yes you can create or add a metallic finish, yes you can paint rattan, no you don't have to sand off all the varnish to paint it. Yes you can paint your walls even if you have never done it before, and most definitely yes you can create a space that is reflective of who you are, with the colours you love, the style you love, create a space that evokes an instant feeling or mood that transcends you to a special feeling or memory. Even our brightest Artisan colours will hold a complexity and softness with many subtle nuances within it that makes it ideal for an interior space. Create a space that makes you feel that pop of joy when you walk into it, it can be colour and it can still be elegant, stylish and timeless because after all, you are not following the latest trend but rather putting your mark on it and being brave enough to be different and make it yours, surrounding yourself with what you love.
We often find that once our customers explore with colour, and discover the ease and beauty of working with Artisan Paints, it often invigorates a bravery or new energy to continue through whether it be onto walls, then furniture or onto the next room and the next. If you have wondered what it would look like if you painted pretty much everything in your room with Artisan Paints, then this blog is a great showcase of that. So let's start first with the furniture....
Mid Century Modern style furniture intended for the bedroom makeover, you can often find pieces like this in op shops or trade me, once loved and discarded as it no longer fits into modern living....
How suited to modern living is this piece now. Stunning results with Carbon Black Velvet Luxe on the frame, Sea Mist on the drawers and Artisan Metallics on the legs and handles transforming and elevating the piece to suit a modern space with a bespoke edge. When looking to do a piece with straight lines, look at how you can make it bespoke, add that designer flair through colour blocking or working with tone on tone, break up the "blocky-ness" up by breaking the piece up with different Artisan neutrals, colours, textures and finishes, add metallics for that touch of luxe, and you can use that same Artisan Metallic over the handles as well to tie it all together.
The headboard, the set of drawers and the bedsides were are all odd pieces that have been brought together through an Artisan Paint finish to create a stunning bedroom suite with Velvet Luxe in Carbon Black, Sea Mist and Artisan Metallic Gold. Little to no prep, little to no odour, low in VOCs, dries in an hour, this hybrid Premium Chalk Paint requires no wax or lacquer. Painting bedroom furniture can be super quick with Velvet Luxe and it's self levelling qualities means you don't have to be a pro to have a "pro finish". How gorgeous is it all against that wall in Dusky Fields Matte Estate Wall Paint....
Matte Estate Wall Paint is an Artisan paint ideal for first time wall painters, or the experienced DIYER's. Built also with advanced self levelling qualities, it dries beautifully smooth, flat and matte every time. Pair it with our Wooster roller and effortlessly roll it across your walls for luxuriously smooth matte walls in Artisan Crafted Colours every time. There is a difference in living among rich mutli-pigmented colours, the depth of the colour is most evident when spread across a large surface like a wall, showing you how it will react and adjust to all types of lighting, beautifully bringing out those subtle undertones and hues, adjusting beautifully to its environment and surrounding yourself in a true Artisan living colour.
Dusky Fields on the wall has added so much life to this room, creating an instant mood as you walk in. The painted furniture contrasts beautifully and completes the re-styling of this room through Artisan paints. All the skirting and Trimming in white absolutely pops against it.
Let's take another look at the room before
and after...
Rattan head board painted in Carbon Black Velvet Luxe, Sea Mist on the frame and detailed in Artisan gold.
The pictures really do speak for themselves with this bedroom makeover, taking a room thats plain and simple and injecting Artisan colour and life not only on to the walls but also with the furniture and even some of the decor like the little vase you see above on the bedside. The idea is that if you have discovered a beautiful Artisanal paint, rich in pigments with the ability to adhere to most surfaces with very little prep. The project at hand becomes do-able even for the novice painter with just a little know how. We like to think that we've put all the hard work into each can of Artisan Paint so that you can go on to experience a new elevated level of luxe DIY, ideal for those living busy lives which is pretty much all of us these days. Paint your room and move into it straight away with little to no odour, apply your metallics not just on detailing but on your decor too and have it dry within 30 minutes... transform your furniture have it dry within an hour. Transform your walls and decor to suit the look and style you are after, using only the colours and finishes you love. The artisanal possibilities are endless with a vast and wide range of finishes, colours and textures within the Artisan paint range. You are limited only by your imagination....
So with this, we will end with words directly from Belinda herself after transforming her guest bedroom.
"Over the years, I have used a multitude of different wall paints, and even though I stock The Artisan Company’s Paint Range, I can truthfully tell you, with hand on heart, that this is by far, the most superior Wall Paint I have ever used, multi pigmented, with a fast dry time and delivering on a flat finish, hiding imperfections" - Belinda M
Thank you Belinda for this gorgeous inspiration of your guest bedroom. We absolutely love this showcase of a whole bedroom furniture and all painted in Artisan Paints x
