Softly aged table in Artisan Premium Chalk Paints- Video included
We are all too familiar with these vintage tables, dark mahogany with that shiny dark glossy varnish, maybe a few water stains, a bit of a crack in one of the legs with a whole lot of dust. Such great candidates for Artisan Paints and Products, no priming, or sanding being able to paint straight onto them means little effort, great visual impact and so functional for the home.
This was a small table where we chose to work alongside the imperfections and history of the piece to create a softly aged table using the colours drawn from the room it's going into to create a really subtle connection to the cushions, throws and soft furnishings in the room.
What we did:
We have used the Artisan Colour Smudge technique on this. If you haven't seen the video for this we've included it below for you where you will see and understand what a diluted colour smudge, and dry colour smudge is all about. We are using Peony an off white as a base and with colours that contrast rather than merge so steel wool has also been used as well see below.
Painting: Painted in Artisan Premium Chalk Paint in Peony using a Staalmeester series 2020 brush; size 18 for the table top and a pointed tip; size 12 for the legs (make sure you choose the right size brush to avoid paint build up on the delicate details). Brushed in all directions to create subtle texture just like in the video . We did two coats.
Waxing: Just like in the Video, we continued with a Club House grey colour wax. Bear in mind there is a stronger contrast between Clubhouse grey and Peony than the colours used and shown in the video, so after this step your project may look a little overpowered by that clubhouse grey wax (if you've totally mastered it, move on to the next step). If you feel it's gone too grey use fine steel wool a bit like an eraser and lightly run this over the painted and waxed surface to highlight, and bring the Peony back more, let the Club House grey collect between the brushstrokes, corners and edges. You can find the steel wool we're talking about by clicking here
Colour Smudges as shown in the video in this order:
Diluted Colour Smudge first in Tahr just in the corners and on selected areas
Diluted Colour Smudge in Duck Egg in selected areas only with some overlapping the Tahr, you will find this start to soften the whole look.
Dry Colour Smudge in Tahr just in the corners, dips and some of the bevels
Dry Colour Smudge in Duck Egg just here and there
Optional Final run of the fine steel wool if needed which will help you to balance your colour smudges in areas where you may have gone to strong, this will help to soften or highlight the area.
Optional: a touch of Metallic glide in forgotten gold on the edges if your like the imperfect look, lightly run your fine steel wool over this too.
The Artisan Colour Smudge technique is a fun and easy technique that can get you creating all types of different soft looks with Artisan Premium Chalk paint colours and waxes. There are no mistakes, just what you like, explore have fun and have fun painting!
