Commissioned Bookcase in Artisan Premium Chalk Paint
Bookcases are ideal for an Artisan Makeover, often large and blocky, customers often find them too dark, too orange too overbearing. A great chance to revive it suit the colour and styling of your home in a finish that you like; making it a bespoke piece in your home, appearing like it was made and designed for the space rather than being the odd piece out or an after thought. With bookcases often being larger in size an Artisan Paint finish can make a big impact in your interior space and the area that it sits in. We often recommend doing the internals in a contrast or slightly differently to break up the "blockiness" of a bookcase; it also allows you to add a bespoke and special detail to the piece, whether it be through freshening it up in an Artisan White or punching it out in a colour that you have drawn from the space or outlook.
This commission piece in it's new finish has given it a completely new look and style, elegant light and sophisticated, lightly aged on the externals for a character finish working in with the imperfections to bringing it to life as part of the overall finish. The new Artisan paint finish makes it appear larger yet softer at the same time in the colours and finish to perfectly suit our clients space
What we did :
Painting externals :
Hand painted with sublte texture in a custom mix of 50/50 Potters Clay and Crisp White, using staalmeester series 2020 size 18. Once dry and completely covered, lightly sand with 240 grit sandpaper to remove any unwanted textures leaving behind subtle textures only.
Waxing: a mix of Artisan dark Wax and clear wax to create a light brown wax for subtle ageing. Brushed on with Staalmeester 3600 brush and wiped back with lint free rag,
(optional) some areas were given more lowlights and framing by dry brushing Artisan Dark wax in specific areas then lightly dusting off with a clean lint free rag
TiP: if you ever find your dark wax to be too dark or heavy, use plain clear wax back over it to remove , simply brush it on in circular motion and firmly wipe with a clean lint free rag to remove; works like an eraser.
Internals : Edged and cut in around the internals and shelving with a one inch (10) Staalmeester flat brush in Velvet Luxe in Wild Tusk with the surfaces rolled over with Staalmeester mini rollers for a flat; smooth one colour finish. 2 and half coats with a roller (no wax as Velvet Luxe does not require it) Note: a mini roller will allow you to paint flatter surfaces like this easier and faster and is ideal when doing a flat finish where no hand painted texture is required.
Tip: When looking to do the internals a different colour or neutral, you can either go tone on tone by using the same colour and mixing a little white until you get to the right tone, contrasting with a white or darker colour or one of our favourites is if you have colour in your home, artwork, a special outlook, or detail in your home in colour draw one of the colours out on the internals of your bookcase to link the space and create a bespoke detail unique to your home.If you use your bookcase for displaying decor, choose a colour that will compliment what you are displaying eg) if it's full of crystals and glass a deep dark backdrop can help to create mood, enhance the crystal and glass and elevate your setting even more.
