Doing Artisan white with character; white doesn't have to be bland or stark and this  beautiful commission project of a coffee table shows just that, originally a high gloss and tired table with chips and markings from it's history, Premium Chalk Paint has been used to hand  paint directly over the existing surface to create hand painted texture, using the rich body of the paint to fill in fine scratches then applying an artisan coloured wash to subtly age, detail and enhance the imperfections to fit into the overall look of a softly aged,  elegant white coffee table. Sealed with Artisan Premium lacquer for durability and practicality for the bespoke hand painted finish to function as a high use coffee table.

A great example for those who want to go from dark to white with en existing coffee table or large piece of furniture;  without it being a stark contemporary white. Going from dark to light on a large piece of furniture can instantly brighten, lift  and  shift the mood in an interior space; adding a more restful calming touch to the room.

What we did :

Painting:
Hand painted with texture (painting in all directions)  in Wild Tusk Premium Chalk Paint using a Staalmeester series 2020 size 18 and and pointed tip size 12  for corners and edges  loading plenty of paint as we go. It's important to use brushes in proportion to your piece to avoid paint build up. Painted in two good coats brushing in all directions both times. Once dry;  lightly sanded with 240 grit sandpaper  to remove excess texture and to create a silky smooth touch to the surface but leaving plenty of texture behind

Colour Wash: A colour wash was required for creating a subtle age over the white and also to allow us to use Artisan Premium Lacquer as a finishing top coat.(remember you can't use Artisan Lacquer over coloured waxes)

Tahr Premium Chalk Paint diluted with water in a cup, 70% water 30% Artisan Tahr Premium Chalk Paint, mixed together to create a light brown dye like consistency. Picking up a small amount of the colour wash (just enough to wet the tips of the bristles)  with our staalmeester series 2020 brush in size 18. Brushed over Wild Tusk in one directions and lightly ragged over with a clean lint free rag creating a soft subtle age working in sections until the entire coffee table was covered in a an artisan coloured wash/

Tip: if you find your wash too strong in areas or becomes a little patchy, pick up plain water on your brush and rework the area by brushing over and wipe to adjust, works like an eraser.

A second colour wash was then created this time making it a little stronger a 50/50 mix of water and Tahr Premium Chalk Paint and this was used to create low lights and define areas with age using Staalmeester angled fitch brushing on in selected areas and then ragging back .

Lacquer: Artisan Premium Matte Lacquer applied with a Staalmeester flat 2inch brush to seal the hand painted finish and for durability.
