For a smooth finish
1. Add a little bit of water, 2. Stir Well, 3.Use a good quality flat synthetic brush
(its important with a fresh can that you stir well and thoroughly, once you've given it a good stir, the next time you go to use it's a quick stir)
Brush the paint in one direction
If you have covered in one coat then you have completed your painting, if you have missed bits where the wood is still visible, go with a second coat, you can water down the second coat even more for a really smooth finish.
Once the paint has dried, for a really smooth finish lightly with out too much pressure with 240 grit Sandpaper .
Wax or Lacquer to seal.
